This project is a small 3D environment asset based on the actual art studio I use to do my paintings. My main focus was on creating a variety of textures and materials that have a reasonable sense of realism and use. I worked primarily off of reference images as well as my own experiences using the physical space. I used a variety of shading and texturing techniques, including Substance Painter, Substance Designer, and images of actual pieces of my own artwork. I also took this scene as an opportunity to introduce myself to XGen hair generation, which I used for both the paint brushes.
All assets were modeled in Maya, and the scene is rendered in realtime using Unreal Engine 4. This was my first time using UE4 for anything, so it definitely came with many challenges, and I know some issues still persist (particularly regarding lighting). However, I think it was worth it to expand my tool arsenal and continue growing my craft. In the future, I'd love to tackle some exterior assets or landscaping!
Here are some turn tables of a few key assets, rendered offline with Arnold, along with some reference images.
I think it's important to appreciate progress and growth. This project has been evolving for almost a year and a half, since a few months after I started 3D art. It began with just a simple exercise of modeling art supplies and whenever I learn new skills and techniques, I've gone back and enhanced it. I'm proud of how much I've learned in the past two years, and I'm so excited to keep improving!
